Road Biking

Golden may have a limited number of road cycling routes to choose from, however, the routes available are more than worth checking out! With beautiful views in all directions, plenty of wildlife and very minimal traffic, a weekend of cycling in Golden will not keep you bored - it will keep you coming back for more!

One very popular loop is Golden to the Blaeberry Valley, via Golden Upper Donald Road. Very minimal traffic (this is not a highway road) and the loop offers plenty of choices to extend or shorten up your ride. To top off the day, you can tack on a ride to Kicking Horse Mountain Resort - one of the most fantastic climbs you will ever experience! It's very easy to tack on 90km combining the Blaeberry Valley and KHMR.

Many cyclists also head West on the Trans Canada Highway to Rogers Pass. There is no shortage of breathtaking views on this ride into Kootenay National Park! The shoulder room is ample width on this route. It's easy to make a 100km day on this ride!

Heading South on Highway 95 (newly paved for 8km to Nicholson) is another option, with options to branch off on some quiet and challenging roads along the way. Just 8km South on Highway 95, Almberg Road offers a steep and challenging climb, and branches off to Crandall Road and McAllister Road. Be sure to drop into Nicholson, and chances are, you'll see hang gliders and paragliders landing beside you while you ride up McBeath Road! For those ambitious to keep heading South on the 95, the scenery of the Columbia Wetlands is absolutely amazing and must be experienced!

The Golden Triangle is a legendary highway loop that circuits a large swath of the Rocky Mountains. Over 300 km long, and bisecting three national parks (Banff, Yoho and Kootenay), the Golden Triangle is a challenging, spirit-raising bucket-lister for road bikers. The three vertices of the triangle are Banff, Radium Hot Springs and, as the name might suggest, Golden.

Unfortunately, one of the challenges of the loop has been the narrow shoulders in sections. In recent years, however, much of the butt-clenching between Lake Louise and Golden has been eased with the twinning of Hwy. 1. And more improvements are scheduled for the serpentine section through Kicking Horse Canyon just east of Golden. Also, in 2011, two significant upgrades that will incorporate wide shoulders specifically for bicycles will be completed on Hwy. 1 and Hwy. 95.

The Community Bike Share program is a first-of-its-kind-in-BC initiative provides free bicycle use for locals and visitors alike with a credit card security. Now it is possible to cruise around town, visit a pub and go for a dip in the river, and not even own a bike! See Golden Active Transportation for more info.
